Abstract
992,176. Storage display tubes. TEKTRONIX Inc. March 18, 1963 [March 19, 1962], No. 10659/63. Drawings to Specification. Heading H1D. A storage display tube has a single direct viewing screen for storage and display, comprising a light transparent conductive support of tin oxide applied to the face-plate of the tube (over a fused glass graticule), and covered with a thin storage dielectric layer of phosphor material, e.g. Zn 2 SiO 4 : Mn. A positive charge image is formed thereon by a high velocity beam writing gun 52, Fig. 4 (not shown), causing secondary emission from the layer and a pair of flood guns 76 causing continued secondary emission, and the production of a corresponding light image. A further " contrast enhancement " gun 92, Fig. 6 (not shown) may be mounted between the flood guns 76. An alternative arrangement of the storage target, Fig. 9 (not shown) comprises a layer of glass frit 114 between the phosphor and conductive layer to increase contrast by reducing the background light and increase the resistivity of the storage phosphor layer. The Specification explains the operation of the tube with reference to Figs, 10, 11 (not shown) and indicates that for the phosphor to act as a storage dielectric it should be about 0À001 to 0À003 inch thick, i.e. about one-third the thickness of a conventional C.R.T. screen, and the phosphor layer should be porous with the particles not in good electrical contact. It is suggested that a colour dot screen may be made. Operating details.-(i) The contrast gun may be omitted and the effect obtained by applying a - 10 v. pulse to the cathodes of floodguns for 10% of the time they are on. (ii) The writing speed may be increased when the flood guns are turned off, as by applying a - 200 v. pulse to the control grids (iii) The erase may be improved by pulsing the conducting layer (tin oxide) from +300 v. to +400 v.; reducing to 0 v., and slowly increasing to + 300 v. Specification 988,154 is referred to.
