Abstract
Sulphate, carbonate and phosphate pigments are rendered organophilic by the treatment of an aqueous slurry thereof in the presence of aluminium or zinc oxide, hydrated oxide and/or hydroxide with an anion active surfactant, separating the precipitate, optionally washing it, drying and optionally disintegrating the products. The anionic surfactants may be the alkali metal, including ammonium, salts of saturated, unsaturated or substituted fatty acids of at least 8 C atoms, or polymerized unsaturated fatty acids. Alkyl, aryl or mixed alkyl-aryl sulphates or sulphonates or the alkali metal salts of alkyl, aryl or mixed alkyl aryl phosphoric or poly-phosphoric acids may also be employed as the anionic surfactant. The amounts of zinc or aluminium oxide/hydroxide preferably used is 0.1 to 4%, the amount of anionic surfactant 0.1 to 15% by weight calculated on the pigments. Among pigments treated in the examples are calcium carbonate, sulphate and phosphate, barium sulphate, strontium carbonate, lead carbonate, apatite, lithopone. The examples include receipes of paint and varnish formulations and tests performed on dried films. Specifications 914,889, 917,947, 928,457 and 929,230 are referred to.ALSO:Examples disclose the use of organophilized pigments, namely calcium sulphate, barium sulphate, calcium, strontium and lead carbonate, calcium phosphate, apatite, lithopone, rendered organophilic by a novel treatment (see Division C1) in paints comprising alkyd resins based on dehydrated castor oil, white spirit, cobalt driers and further pigments titanium dioxide, organophilic chrome yellow, and French blue. The Specification refers to the use of the invention in paints and varnishes based on nitrocellulose, aminoplasts, phenoplasts and epoxides. Comparative data using untreated pigments is also given. Specifications 914,889, 917,947, 928,457 and 929,230 are referred to. ALSO:Sulphate, carbonate and phosphate pigments are rendered organophilic by the treatment of an aqueous slurry thereof in the presence of aluminium or zinc oxide, hydrated oxide and/or hydroxide with an anion active surfactant, separating the precipitate, optionally washing it, drying and optionally disintegrating the products. The anionic surfactants may be the alkali metal including ammonium salts of saturated, unsaturated or substituted fatty acids of at least 8 C atoms, polymerized unsaturated fatty acids. Alkyl, aryl or mixed alkyl-aryl sulphates or sulphonates or the alkali metal salts of alkyl, aryl or mixed alkyl aryl phosphoric or poly phosphoric acids may also be employed as the anionic surfactant. The amounts of zinc or aluminium oxide/hydroxide preferably used is 0.1 to 45, the amount of anionic surfactant 0.1 to 15% by weight calculated on the pigments. Among pigments treated in the examples are calcium carbonate, sulphate and phosphate, barium sulphate, strontium carbonate, lead carbonate, apatite, lithopone. The examples include recipes of paint and varnish formulations and tests performed on dried films. Specifications 914,889, 917,947, 928,457 and 929,230 are referred to.
