Abstract

The invention comprises vat dyes of the anthraquinone and perylene tetracarboxylic acid series that are free from carboxylic acid amide groups, but that contain at least one stable sulphonic acid group, at least one hetercyclic 5-membered ring, and, if they are of the anthraquinone series, contain at least 4 carbocyclic rings in a single fused quinoid ring system or at least three 9:10-dioxoanthracene nuclei which form part of a fused ring system. The dyes are made by sulphonating an appropriate vat dyestuff, by hydrolysing an appropriate vat dyestuff containing a sulphohalide group or by subjecting an appropriate intermediate containing a stable sulphonic acid group to ring closure, for example by carbazolizing an anthrimide or by converting a dicarboxylic acid hydrazide to an oxdiazole or a perylene dicarboxylic oxylic acid di(carboxylic acid amide) to a perylene tetracarboxylic acid diimide. In examples vat dyes of the above type are made which are derived from benzanthrone-pyrazoleanthrone, tri-, tetra- and penta-anthrimidecarbazoles, acedianthrone, dibenzanthrone, di-benzpyrenequinone and perylene tetracarboxylic acid diimide. The dyes dye and print cellulose textile materials by the usual vat dyeing and printing methods.
