Abstract

991,679. Blocking oscillators. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. March 20, 1963 [March 21, 1962], No. 11092/63. Headings H3P and H3T. A blocking oscillator comprises a valve or transistor having regenerative feedback via a three-winding transformer, one winding being connected in the output circuit whilst the other two are connected in the control circuit, a semiconductor diode being shunted across the control circuit so as to maintain the output voltage constant between pulses. Both half cycles of the resulting waveform are then substantially rectangular. As shown, transistor T is arranged to be saturated by base current supplied via resistor R1 and winding 2. The collector current increases until the transformer saturates, when the base current is no longer sufficient to maintain the transistor T in saturation. The collector current thus begins to fall so that the transistor T is rapidly cut off by the regenerative feedback action via winding 2 and terminates the positive half cycle across the load R2. The positive potential induced in winding 3 is limited by the forward threshold voltage of diode D1 to a value slightly higher than the supply voltage. The transistor remains non-conductive until the energy of the transformer is reduced sufficiently to cut off diode D1, when a further cycle commences. The mark/ space ratio is dependent on the turns ratio of windings 1, 3 e.g. 1: 1.
