Abstract
Vinyl chloride, optionally together with one or more comonomers, is polymerized in an aqueous medium by a process which comprises polymerizing the monomer in a first stage in the absence of emulsifying agent and then continuing the polymerization in a second stage wherein an emulsifying agent or the constituents thereof are added continuously, characterized in that in said first stage the weight ratio of water to monomer is 0.1:1 to 0.8:1, said second stage being commenced from 10 to 120 minutes after the start of the first stage. Specified comonomers are vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, alkyl esters of acrylic, methacrylic, maleic and fumaric acids, maleic anhydride, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of catalysts, e.g. hydrogen peroxide and alkali metal and ammonium persulphates, percarbonates and peracetates. Specified emulsifiers are sodium salts of sulphated and sulphonated hydrocarbons and fatty acids, e.g. sodium dioctylsulphosuccinate, sulphonated diesel oil and sodium lauryl sulphate; quaternary ammonium compounds, e.g. stearamidopropyl dimethyl - b - hydroxyethyl ammonium nitrate, cetyl pyridinium chloride and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide; and polyalkylene oxides, e.g. polyethylene oxides. Examples describe the polymerization of vinyl chloride in the presence of water, ammonium persulphate and ammonia, with the addition of sodium lauryl sulphate, at various water to monomer ratios and various durations of the first stage. Specification 699,016 is referred to.
