Abstract

A process for making a tobacco product for use in smokable articles (e.g. cigars, cigarettes) comprises withdrawing from tobacco a substantial proportion of the fibrous material whose pyrolysis generates tars, and combining the non-fibrous remainder with a carrier comprising noncombustible fibres (e.g. glass, asbestos, corborundum, potassium titanate fibres or a mixture thereof) formed into a paper web. The tobacco is extracted with hot or boiling water and additionally optionally with solvent (e.g. ethyl ether, acetone) the extracts are concentrated and combustible diluents such as water soluble cellulose derivatives e.g. dextrin and mineral fillers which effect the burning rate of the tobacco e.g. alumina may be added before the extract is sprayed on to the paper web prepared from non-combustible fibres. To facilitate bonding of the fibres during the formation of the paper web cellulosic fibres such as wood pulp may be used, or extracted tobacco leaf. The recombination of the non-fibrous material of the tobacco is performed in such amounts that the proportion of fibrous material to non-fibrous material in the final product is substantially the same as in the original tobacco.
