Abstract
<PICT:0991483/C1/1> As shown, an excess of air, hydrocarbon material and recycle gas are passed through preheaters 1, 2 and 3 and lines C, D and F respectively into a combustion zone of a furnace 4, a further stream of preheated hydrocarbon material being passed through a line D1 into a carbon black-producing zone of the furnace. The effluent passes through a water cooler 5, carbon black separator 6, further cooler 7 and then passed, in four separate streams, to heat exchangers 1, 2 and 3 as heating medium and to the furnace as the recycle gas. In a modification, carbon dioxide is used in addition to or instead of the recycle gas. In a further modification, the hydrocarbon material fed to the combustion zone is replaced by another fuel preheated in a further heat exchanger. The air may be preheated to 1600 DEG C. Combustion may be effected at a temperature of 1800 DEG C. and a pressure of 3-5 atmospheres. Decomposition to produce carbon black may be effected at 1000-1500 DEG C. for 0.008-0.6 sec., followed by rapid cooling to below 900 DEG C.
