Abstract

Interferon may be produced in situ in a human or animal host with the aid of at least one virus culture inactivated with beta propiolactone, or may be produced in a conventional manner by a method which comprises bringing isolated living cells of human or animal tissue into contact with at least one virus culture inactivated with beta-propiolactone. The virus culture may be a culture of myxovirus, arborvirus, measles, vaccinia or herpes virus. For in situ production, the patient is treated with an intranasal or intraconjunctival preparation in which inactivated virus culture is mixed with a non-toxic carrier for topical administration, e.g. water, normal saline, preservative and, in the case of aerosols, propellants.
