Abstract

The process for the preparation of a compound of a general formula <FORM:0990486/C2/1> wherein X represents a halogen atom, which comprises hydrolysing 3,5-dihalo-4-methylbenzenesulphonyl chloride or bromide with formic acid, preferably a 95% by weight aqueous solution and at 50 DEG -150 DEG C. and desulphonating the resulting sulphonic acid by treatment with a medium promoting the ionisation of the sulphonic acid at a temperature of at least 180 DEG C., preferably by passing an aqueous solution of the sulphonic acid into a stable non-volatile acid medium e.g. 75-85% sulphuric acid at a temperature of at least 180 DEG C. Superheated steam preferably at 230-250 DEG C. is blown through the acid medium and the desired product collected from the condensed vapour. In an example 3,5-dichloro-4-methyl-benzenesulphonyl chloride is refluxed with 95% formic acid, excess formic acid being distilled off and the residue dissolved in water which is passed into 80% sulphuric acid through which superheated steam is blown at a temperature of 230 DEG to 150 DEG C. The volatile products on condensation gave 2,6-dichlorotuluene.
