Abstract

1,3-Butadiene is polymerized to a polymer having a high cis-1,4 content using a catalyst formed by mixing (a) an organometallic compound RnM or R2ACH, where R is alkyl, cyclo-alkyl, aryl or combinations thereof, M is magnesium or aluminium and n is an integer equal to the valence of M, (b) a titanium halide TiXy, where X is chlorine or bromine and y is 2, 3 or 4 and (c) iodine mono- or tri-chloride, iodine mono- or tri-bromide or hydrogen iodide. The mol. ratio of organo-metal compound to iodine being greater than 1 : 1. Lists of components (a) and combinations of (a), (b) and (c) are given, but catalyst components actually employed in the examples are (i) triisobutyl aluminium, titanium tetrachloride and iodine monochloride and (ii) triisobutyl aluminium, titanium tetrachloride and hydrogen iodide. The polymerization is preferably carried out in an aromatic solvent.
