Abstract
a -Olefinic hydrocarbons are polymerized using as a polymerization catalyst a mixture comprising (1) a halide, alkoxyhalide or lower alkoxide of Ti, Zr, Va, Cr or Mo, the halogen in the halide or alkoxyhalide being I2, Cl2 or Br2 (2) a diaryl ether R-O-R1, where R and R1 are aryl radicals, preferably containing up to 12 carbon atoms, whose aromatic rings are directly attached to the oxygen atom and (3) at least one component which is (a) a metal from Group Ia, IIa, IIb, or IIIa of Lange's Table, or an alkyl derivative or hydride of such a metal or a complex metal hydride of aluminium and an alkali metal, (b) an organo-aluminium halide of formula RmAlXn or R3Al2X3, where R is a lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl or tolyl radical, X is Cl2 or Br2 and m and n are integers and (m+n) equals the valency of aluminium or (c) a polymeric reaction product of aluminium and a methylene halide. The molecular weight of the polymers can be varied by adding hydrogen. In the examples, polymers are formed from propylene; 1-butene, 3-methyl-1-butene; styrene; allylbenzene; vinylcyclohexane; butadiene and 4-vinylcyclohexene.
