Abstract

989, 691. Sewing machines. I. A. LESLIE. April 7, 1964 [Jan. 15, 1963], No. 1716/63. Heading D1G. [Also in Division H2] In an electrically-driven sewing machine, a device for controlling the speed of the driving motor is operated by fluid-pressure responsive means, pneumatically or hydraulically remotery controlled by foot-or-knee operable control means. An insulating bar 6, Fig. 2, carries spacedapart metal contacts 8 and is fixed to an insulating bar 5 carrying a resistance wire coil 4 in series with the driving motor, the contacts 8 engaging the coil 4 and constituting taps thereof. A resilient metal contact arm 7 is fixed at one end to bar 6 and is normally disengaged from the contacts 8. A fixed, inflatable air sac ,16 is disposed beneath a protuberance 15 at the free end of arm 7 and is connected by flexible tubing 17 to a foot-operable air bulb 18. Pressure on the latter serves to inflate sac 16 for raising arm 7 into progressive engagement with contacts 8. The speed of the motor is thereby determined by the degree of inflation of sac 16. A fan on the mirror shaft directs air on to coil 4. In a modification, Fig. 6, a wire coil 19 is engaged by contacts 20 on a bar 21. One end of a contact arm 22 is pivoted at 26 to one end of an oppositely-projecting resilient carrier arm 27 fixed at its other end to bar 21. A fixed air sac 23, disposed adjacent the free end of arm 21, is connected by flexible tubing 25 to a foot-operable air bulb 24. Arm 22 has a convex edge 28 which, when arm 22 is actuated by compression of bulb 24, engages the contacts only one at a time. A oneway air intake valve may be fitted to the footoperable bulb. A mechanical linkage may be interposed between the inflatable sac and the contact arm. The operating fluid may be water. The pressure responsive means may have metal diaphragms or metal bellows. The resistance coil may be replaced by a carbon-pile variable resistance.
