A fuel cell has a self.supporting, flat or slightly dished electrolyte member which is either solid electrolyte or a porous solid impregnated with an electrolyte and which is characterized by having, at least on one side, an integral raised rim portion. The member may also have a coating of electrolyte material on the side having the rim. The electrolyte may be a non-eutectic mixture of carbonates (see Specification 806,592) and the fuel electrode may be of silverized zinc oxide (see Specification 806,591).
