Abstract

988, 767. Finishing and tensioning yarns. HEBERLEIN & CO. A.G. Jan. 20, 1964 [Feb. 1, 1963], No. 2452/64. Headings DID and D1F. In a process for permanently crimping multifilament and staple fibre yarns of thermoplastic material e.g. a polyamide, polyester, vinyl polymer or copolymer, or polyolefin, and mixed yarns of thermoplastic fibres and non-thermoplastic natural fibres, wherein at least two yarns are plied together along a length, subjected in such condition to heat-fixing and separated again by pulling them apart at the same speed in different directions, the tension in each of the separated yarns is regulated in the immediate vicinity of the point of separation by a device the operation of which is controlled in dependence upon lateral deviations of the point from its central position. As shown in Fig. 1, yarns 1, 2, fed by rollers 3 and 4 over guides 35, 36, are plied and then fixed in a heater 45. The ply then passes through a guide 7 mounted on a lever pivoted in a horizontal plane so that, on deviation of the point of yarn separation 6, the guide engages a slidably mounted contact 8 or 9 to complete a circuit to an electromagnet 10 or 11 and thereby actuate a filament brake 12 or 13 which correctively adjusts the tension on one separated yarn or the other. The yarns then pass around guide pulleys 38, 39, 40 and 41, 42, 43, and rollers 44 and 44<SP>1</SP> carried on arms which pivot against restraining springs, Fig. 2 (not shown) to compensate for the temporarily increased tension, caused by operation of the brakes 12, 13, in the yarns passing therefrom to feed rollers 14 and 15. Several forms of electromagnetic and eddy current brakes including retarded rolleys and double discs or plates are described, Figs. 3-5 and Figs. 6-8 (not shown). In another apparatus, Fig. 9, the lateral deviation of the point 6 moves a pivoted shield 30 so that one of two apertures (as at 32) therein permits passage of light emitted from a lamp 26 on to a photocell 27 or 28, whereby a current is controlled to actuate the yarn tension regulation.
