Abstract

988,353. Air heaters. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. March 25, 1964 [March 29, 1963], No. 12649/64. Heading F4S. In an air heater for the combustion air of a steam generator wherein the air passes serially through three sections of the heater, cold-end corrosion is prevented by passing a minor proportion of hot flue gas directly to the end section of the heater adjacent the air inlet and then combining the gas flow from this section with the main flow of flue gas passed through the section of the heater adjacent the air outlet for flow through the intermediate section. A steam generator furnace 10 is fired by cyclone furnaces 24, the combustion gases flowing through a lateral pass 17 and downpass 19 containing a primary superheater 30 and economizer 31 to an outlet 34 whence they flow through the metal tubes 41C of an air heater section 52 into an ash hopper 55. Flue gases at a higher temperature drawn from a gap 32 between the primary superheater and economizer flow through a duct 77 to the inlets of tubes 41A of a section 50 of the air heater adjacent the air inlet and discharge therefrom into the hopper 55. The two flows mix in the hopper and flow upwardly through the tubes 41B of the intermediate section 51 of the air heater to a dust collector 81. Combustion air is driven by a fan 44 through the sections 50 ... 52 to the windbox 48 of the cyclone furnaces. The by-pass duct 77 is dimensioned or provided with dampers so that about 10% of the total flue gas flow enters the section 50. By passing this hot gas through the tubes 41A nearest the cold air inlet cold-end corrosion is substantially eliminated. Specification 771,924 is referred to.
