Abstract

The invention comprises 5,12-dihydro-5,7,12, 14 - tetraazapentacene - 2 - or 9 - sulphonic or 2,9-disulphonic acids, their sodium and potassium salts, the preparation thereof by reacting 5,12 - dihydro - 5,7,12,14 - tetraazapentacene with fuming sulphuric acid or with chlorosulphonic acid in the presence of mercuric oxide or mercuric sulphate as a catalyst and if desired refining and separating a mixture of mono- and di-sulphonic acids by column chromatography, and pharmaceutical compositions containing them. The process involves the formation and subsequent hydrolysis of the sulphonyl chloride when chlorosulphonic acid is used. Pharmaceutical compositions useful in the treatment of cataract are in the form of eye drops or solutions for injection and comprise the compounds of the invention together with a suitable carrier.
