Abstract

988,177. Cooling systems for hydraulic power circuits. COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. Feb. 28, 1963 [March 9, 1962], No. 9288/62. Heading F4U. A heat exchanger system for an hydraulic power transmission which is driven by a water-cooled prime-mover 1, comprises an oil/water heat exchanger 8 wherein the water element 7 is connected to the water cooling circuit of the prime mover, and its oil element 9 to the transmission oil-circuit 10, and differential valves 3 and 11, controlled by the temperature sensitive elements 15 and 16 respectively. The element 15 is responsive to the temperature of the cooling water from the prime mover and the element 16 to that of oil leaving the oil element 9. When starting the whole of the cooling water passes via the outlet 5 to the water element 7 and the main radiator 6 is by-passed. As the engine temperature rises more and more water passes to the radiator 6 via the outlet 4. When the oil temperature rises the valve 11 moves to pass cooling water to the element 7 via an auxiliary radiator 14. The temperature sensitive element 16 may also control a by-pass valve 18, which can, if the oil becomes over-heated, short-circuit the valve 3 and feed all the cooling water direct to the radiator 6.
