Abstract
Spinning solutions are made by polymerizing acrylonitrile, alone or together with up to 15% of another vinyl compound, dissolved in aqueous saline solvents containing zinc chloride, the polymerization being carried out with an initiator comprising an oxy-acid of chlorine or a water-soluble metal salt thereof in amount of 0.0001 to 0.001 mols. per mol. of monomer, a reducing sulphoxy compound or a water-soluble metal salt thereof in amount of more than 10 mols. per mol. of the chlorine oxyacid, and cupric ions in amount of 0.00125 to 0.01 mols. per mol. of monomer. Comonomers specified for use with acrylonitrile are methylacrylate and a mixture of methylacrylate and allyl alcohol. Chlorine oxyacids specified are hypochlorous and chloric acids. Sulphoxy compounds specified are sulphurous, pyrosulphurous and hydrosulphurous acids. Specification 722,451 is referred to.
