Abstract
987,662. Bearings; controlling clutches. TEXTRON Inc. Nov. 25, 1963 [Dec. 3, 1962], No. 46473/63. Headings F2A and F2L. A clutch release ball bearing comprises thrust rings 32, 34 with balls 40 therebetween; and inner and outer retaining members 46, 48, each of which extend between the rings 32, 34. The thrust rings 32, 34 and the retaining members 46, 48 together define an enclosed annular space which, minus the volume occupied by the balls 40 and a spacer 44, provides a grease-space 50. The outer retaining member 48 is located near to the balls 40 so as to minimize the volume of grease-space which lies radially outside an annular path 72 of the balls. The grease-space 50 is not completely filled with grease so as to allow for expansion of the grease and the grease is prevented from escaping by means of labyrinth seals formed between the thrust rings and their retaining members. The spacer 44 comprises a ring 80 with radial spacing portions 82. The thickness of the portions 82, measured axially, is about one fifth of the diameter of a ball 40 and the elements 82 extend radially to a position which is twothirds the radius of a ball from the path 72. In a modification as shown in Fig. 5, the spacer 44a has radial portions 82a which are turned axially in alternate directions to form for each ball a curved lip 90.
