An electrostatic precipitator comprises a series of circular plate collecting electrodes 16 mounted on a hollow rotatable shaft 20 in a housing 10 to lie in planes parallel to the flow of gas through the housing, the collecting electrodes being interleaved by circular discharge electrodes 43 which are rotatably mounted in stationary supporting frameworks suspended from insulator chambers 42, the collecting electrodes 16 and the discharge electrodes 43 being independently rotatable, either continuously or intermittently, to be cleaned respectively by scrapers 64 and brushes 72. As shown the shaft 20 is disposed horizontally and each collecting electrode 16 is associated with scrapers 64 which each comprises a replaceable spring steel blade 62 and is pivoted at 70 to the casing for movement from its operative position, where the blade is offset from but parallel to a radial of the plate, to an inoperative position, shown in broken lines in Fig. 3, permitting replacement of the blade. Each discharge electrode comprises either a plate with points struck therefrom, or as shown, a wheel structure the spokes 48 of which are of barbed wire, the hub 44 of which is journalled on a hub 34 of the fixed framework, and the rim 46 of which is toothed at 52 for driving engagement with a motor driven spur 54 to effect rotation of the discharge electrode against the fixed cleaning brush 72. Dust thus removed by the electrode surfaces falls into a duct 80 at the bottom of the casing and is conveyed therefrom by a drag-link conveyer 82, or by blowing. In alternative arrangements the cleaning of the electrodes may be effected by washing, and the electrodes may be stationary, the associated cleaning devices rotating relative thereto. Covered manholes 74 and 78 may be provided in the shaft 20 between the collecting electrodes and outside the housing 10 for access and inspection purposes.
