Abstract

986,858. Making tubulous walls. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Oct. 10, 1962 [Oct. 11, 1961], No. 38337/62. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F4] A method of forming a tubulous wall from a plurality of finned tubes comprises arranging the tubes side by side with their fins in contact and welding together the pairs of fins by progressively moving fusion welding means longitudinally of the fins whilst heating means are traversed before or after the welding means to soften at least the metal of the fins. A wall comprises four tubes 1 having a pair of diametrically opposed longitudinally extending fins 2 arranged side by side and fusion welded together along the fins using a plurality of weld heads. The assembly is preheated completely or locally along the fins by a traversing heating means or subsequent to welding is stress relieved by heating in a similar manner. As an alternative or in addition to the heating process the fins may be hammered to increase their length to compensate for the shortening caused by the welding between dies when in the hot condition prior to or immediately after welding. After welding the hammering may be carried out after reheating, following the welding, or with the fins cold before or after the welding process. Further heat treatment may be carried out to relieve any hardening or stress resulting from the post weld hammering. The fins may, alternatively, be hammered or pressed to form corrugations 3 along their length before or after welding when in the hot or cold state. Corrugations formed before welding will tend to straighten during welding whilst those which remain or are formed after welding will tend to stiffen the wall member.
