Abstract

986,427. Grinding; trueing grinding wheels. E. FOUQUET. July 13, 1961, No. 25451/61. Heading B3D. A method of grinding comprises the use of a grinding wheel 1, Fig. 1, having a hard synthetic bond with coarse abrasive grains, rotation of the grinding wheel at a peripheral speed of at least 50 metres per sec., traverse of the work 3 at a speed of 0.8 to 1 metre per sec., the provision of two coolant nozzles 4 which are disposed with their outlets as close as possible to the grinding area and direct the coolant at a pressure of about 4 to 6 atmospheres to opposite sides of such area, and the continuous dressing of the grinding wheel by a tool 5 during the grinding operation. The nozzles 4, which are spaced a distance s from the grinding wheel of about 0.2 mm., are arranged to conform to the periphery of the grinding wheel and to provide for the escape of the coolant at the two sides of the wheel. The coarse abrasive grains incorporated in the synthetic bond of the grinding wheel are such as to provide a large number of cutting points 9, Fig. 4, and these are continuously sharpened during the grinding operation by the trueing diamond 5 which is constantly traversed across the periphery of the grinding wheel with an infeed of about 0.002-0.01 mm. for each traverse; alternatively, this operation may be effected by an impact tool which is reciprocated rapidly, preferably at ultrasonic frequency, radially of the wheel. The feed adjustment of the diamond 5 may be coupled with adjustment of the position of the nozzles 4 so that the distance 8 remains constant as the grinding wheel wears. For cylindrical grinding the grinding wheel may be of part-conical form as shown in Fig. 5. The conical zone 16, which has a cone angle of about 2 degrees, is intended for coarse grinding and the cylindrical zone 17 for finish grinding, the zone 16 being sharpened with a more rapid traverse of the tool 5 than is the zone 17.
