A cushioning material, particularly for use as coverings in motor vehicles to protect occupants against the effect of impact in accidents, comprises a layer of material which is compressible but non elastic and an outer, elastically compressible, layer which is preferably 10-20% of the total thickness of the material. The inner layer maycomprise semi-hardened or hardened polyurethane resin foam or urea resin foam, or may be a paper honeycomb impregnated with one of the above resins. The outer layer may comprise plasticized polyurethane foam. A vehicle bumper may be of the same materials or may comprise an aluminium or steel honeycomb covered with an elastic rubber layer.
