Abstract

985,983. Centrifugal separators. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. March 27, 1961 [March 25, 1960], No. 11197/61. Addition to 933,224. Heading B2P. In a modified form of the apparatus described in the parent Specification for separating dust from a stream 4 of dust-laden gas flowing axially into a separating chamber 1, Fig. 1, through an inlet 2, 3, the potential flow set up in the chamber by the introduction of secondary air through a duct 6 is boosted by supplementary air supplied through one or more auxiliary ducts 15 disposed on the spiral path 7 of the potential flow and through a further duct 17 communicating with the chamber at a point level with, or upstream of, the downstream extremity of a flow-control, streamlined body 19 disposed axially of the chamber adjacent the inlet 2, 3, the cleaned air being discharged through an axial outlet 5 defined by an annular member 10. In order to reduce secondary air energy used to create the potential flow which ensures the setting up of rotary flow, guide vanes 22 are annularly disposed in the inlet 2 to impart a rotary motion to the crude gas. The vanes 22 have a radial cross-section increasing in area towards the wall of the inlet 2. The' annular member 10 may be provided at the region of maximum pressure above the entry of the duct 6, as illustrated by the curve 14, with an annular diffuser-like channel 13 through which any stray jet 12 in the region of the duct 6, which jet may carry with it dust separated in the chamber, is directed via a pipe 12a to the chamber or to the crude gas inlet. In modifications, an annular channel, of divergent or convergent shape, is provided between the member 10 and the wall of the chamber. In Fig. 4a, the channel 11 is in the form of an annular groove in the member 10 and contains a ring 31 connected to a tubular insert 30 into which the duct 6 opens. The stray jet 12 is deflected and returned to the chamber as shown by the arrow 32. A streamlined flow control element 33 may be arranged at a distance h from the lower end of the member 10. In Fig. 4b, the tubular insert depending from the ring 31 and the control element 33 are dispensed with and the duct 6 does not project into the chamber. The stray jet is deflected as at 12a and 40.
