985,944. Jet propelled and lifted aircraft. L. BOLKOW, [trading as BOLKOW-ENTWICKLUNGEN KOMM. GES.]. May 23, 1962 [May 25, 1961], No. 19815/62. Heading B7G. An aircraft has two direct lift units 13, 14, located forward and aft of the aircraft centre of gravity respectively. Their jets are deflectable in the aircraft plane of symmetry forwardly or rearwardly, either together to give a propulsive force, or in opposite directions to produce a pitching torque. These units, which may be rocket engines, may be tilted, to discharge downwardly and rearwardly, the maximum jet deflection angle being greater than the angle of tilt. The jets may be deflected by the use of spoilers such as 15 and 16, see also Fig. 4 (not shown), or by auxiliary fluid jets injected at an angle to the main flow, Fig. 5 (not shown). The jets may be deflected laterally to produce rolling torques. In the tail is a gas turbine unit 18, which exhausts through a rearwardly directed variable area nozzle 19, or a downwardly directed nozzle 20, depending on the position of valve members in the jet pipe, Fig. 6 (not shown). The nozzle 20 has a universally tiltable collar 22 mounted on the nozzle by a part spherical bearing, Fig. 6 (not shown), so that forward thrust and yawing torques may be developed.
