Abstract

985,827. Hydraulic clutches; fluid-friction brakes. WARNER ELECTRIC BRAKE & CLUTCH CO. Jan. 12, 1962, No. 1173/62. Headings F2C and F2E. [Also in Divisions G3 and H1] In apparatus employing the property of certain liquids of increasing in viscosity when subjected to an electric field (e.g. to act as a clutch or a brake), and in which means are provided for selectively applying an alternating potential difference between pairs of electrodes so positioned that a thin film of such " electroviscous " liquid is subjected to a large electric field when the alternating potential difference is applied, the electrodes are separated from the liquid by an insulating material of high dielectric constant to reduce the likelihood of electrical breakdown in the liquid. In the embodiment of Fig. 6, a brake comprises a plurality of discs 44, 45, 46 each composed of a central metal-disc electrode enclosed within high dielectric-constant material coaxially secured in fixed positions within a cylindrical shell, leads from the electrodes being brought out to respective ones of three-phase power supply lines 21, 22, 23. A rotatable shaft 58 passing coaxially through the discs 44, 45, 46 carries metal discs 60, 61, 62 rotating therewith and fitting between the discs 44, 45, 46 to define narrow spaces which are filled with an " electroviscous " liquid, examples of which are described in U.S.A. Specifications 2,661,825 and 3,047,507 and in the present Specification. The application of an alternating potential difference between adjacent electrodes causes lines of force to pass from one electrode to the other through the intermediary of the dielectric material and metal discs 60, 61, 62; by the use of a three-phase supply it can be ensured that part of the liquid is subjected to an electric stress at all times, hence causing the liquid to become viscous and hold the discs 60, 61, 62 against rotation.
