Abstract

<PICT:0985044/C6-C7/1> The tin plating on electrolytically formed tin plate is re-flowed by passing the strips through a heat-insulated muffle over spaced conductor rolls by which it is gradually heated by current passing through the strip to a temperature of 400-440 DEG F., and thereafter rapidly heated to 460-500 DEG F. by a high frequency coil, after which the strip is rapidly quenched. The initial rate of heating is 8 DEG F. per foot of strip movement, and in the second stage 75 DEG F. Strip enters a heat-insulated muffle 6 over a conductor roll 5, a deflecting insulated roll 7 and second conductor roll 9 immersed in the quench tank 10. The induction coil 20 is supplied with power through controls 22, which are adjusted in accordance with visual observation of fluctuations in the melt line due to minor variations of gauge in the strip. Alternatively a photoelectric device mounted above and below the strip may be used as automatic control, and govern the final coating to not exceed 0.04 lb. per standard box.
