Abstract

984,762. Bookbinding machines. J. V. CARSTENS. May 23, 1961 [May 24, 1960], No. 18600/61. Heading B6A. A cover-applying mechanism for use in a bookbinding machine such as described in the Specification 984,761, wherein a horizontally disposed cover is applied to the downwards facing spine of a book while the book is in motion, comprises a plurality of freelyrotatable hollow rollers 17, e.g. of nylon, mounted in a frame 16. The latter is supported on a verticallymovable platform 19 covered by a sheet of elastic material 18, e.g. foam rubber. The movement of the platform is guided by telescopic members 25, 26. The platform is held in its lowermost position by tension springs 20, 21 and moved upwardly by means of an electromagnet 28. The roller surface of the mechanism may be replaced by freely rotatable nylon balls disposed in parallel rows, or by an endless belt passing around freely rotatable rollers mounted in the frame. Alternatively, the mechanism comprises a platform 51 carried by telescopic members 52, 54 and 53, 55, urged apart by springs 56, 57. The members 54, 55 are secured to rings 58, 59 respectively, loosely mounted on discs 60, 61. The latter are eccentrically mounted on the shafts 62, 63, of gear-wheels 64, 65, in engagement with a gear-wheel 66 driven via a slip clutch. Rotation of the discs 60, 61, lifts the platform into contact a book spine and moves it horizontally in contact therewith as the telescopic members are compressed. A flange 69 engages the rear edge of the book B to maintain the platform and book in contact.
