Abstract

984,505. Setting-up cartons. JACOB, WHITE & CO. Ltd. Nov. 28, 1963 [Dec. 4, 1962], No. 45770/62. Heading B8C. Collapsed cartons 1 (Fig. 2) to be erected first have a normally flat surface bent by suction cups 6, 7 to admit air into the carton before it is erected. In the form shown the suction cups 6, 7 are initially coplanar, but, after the carton has been dragged past resilient lips 2B on the magazine 2, the suction cups 7 are deflected to the position shown by a fixed cam engaging a follower 7C on the suction cup, so that the carton is bent across a bending bar 9. The cam 10 subsequently restores the suction cup 7 to its initial position, as the carton engages a roller 11 which is initially stationary, erecting the carton as the carton moves downwardly. The roller 11 is subsequently moved inwardly to collapse the carton in the opposite direction, as shown in Fig. 4, when a roller 11F is engaged by continual downward movement of the member 5 carrying the suction cups. The reversely creased carton 1A then engages with a moving belt 12 which co-operates with the roller 11 to eject the carton along the trajectory 13 so that it erects itself as shown in broken lines in Fig. 4. The roller 11 may be driven by a friction roller 15. The suction to the cups 6, 7 is controlled by a switch 8 mounted on a portion 3 of the carrier for the suction cups and operated by stops 8A. The cam 10 and the magazine 2 may be altered to suit different sizes of carton, and the apparatus may have the magazine 2 mounted with its mouth directed horizontally instead of vertically. The sides of the cartons may be supported in the magazine by side flanges 2A or these may be replaced by spring margins similar to the margins 2B.
