Abstract
984,498. Ratchet gearing. UNITED STATES TIME CORPORATION. Oct. 23, 1963 [Oct. 31, 1962; May 13, 1963], No. 41785/63. Heading F2Q. [Also in Division G3] A timekeeping device comprises a ratchet wheel 22 mounted on a base 10 for driving a time train (not shown), this wheel being stepped-on by a jewel 20 carried by a free end of an elastic mechanical oscillator mounted on the base and which is electromagnetically maintained e.g. in known manner through a transistor circuit including a co-operating coil and magnet impulsing device, the mechanical oscillator being so constructed that the jewel 20 is driven in a curvilinear looped path in substantially a single plane, the jewel engaging the wheel teeth during only a small part of its path of travel. The teeth may be of magnetic material and stepped-on past a detent magnet 27. In one form, Fig. 1, the oscillator consists of a first spring blade 14 anchored to the support 12 and having fixed at an angle thereto adjacent its free end a second spring blade 17 carrying the jewel. The inherent oscillation frequencies of the parts 14, 17 are arranged so that the effective oscillations of both parts have the same frequency but the part 17 has a greater amplitude than the part 14, there being a phase shift between the oscillating patterns of about 90 degrees. The size of the oscillation curve of the jewel may vary within relatively wide limits without affecting its function. In another form the oscillator, 40, Fig. 5, comprises a pivoted rigid inertia arm 42 having a controlling spring 46, this arm having fixed thereto adjacent a free end the resonating spring element 17 carrying the jewel 20. A magnetic mass 45 counterbalanced at 44 co-operates with the impulsing coil 30. In a third form, the oscillator 70, Fig. 7, comprises a single resilient blade element shaped in a bent formation as shown so that the jewel 20 at its free end describes the figure-of-eight shaped path 72, the wheel teeth being engaged at a position during one quarter of the cycle. In a fourth embodiment, the oscillator comprises a magnetostrictive bar anchored at one end and carrying at its free end the resonating element 17.
