Abstract

984,424. Microwave ovens. RAYTHEON CO. May 9, 1961 [Sept. 14, 1960], No. 16904/61. Heading H5H. A microwave heating apparatus includes an enclosure at least partially separated into two regions by a partition having a microwave energy permeable portion inclined to the vertical and means for generating microwave energy which is radiated into one of the regions through its bottom wall, whence it is transmitted into the second region along a path such that it is incident from above upon material to be heated, e.g. food, located in the other region. Material 19 is heated by radiation passing through a dielectric portion 18 of a partition 16, from magnetron 22, via the region 14, which is bounded by metal portion 17 of the partition, has a corner reflecting surface 26, and is of large dimensions compared with the wavelength employed. Impedance matching with, and a desired energy distribution over, the body 19 can be obtained by adjustment of the paddle 27, and the height of the metal portion 17 of the partition. In a modification (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), a metal partition extends wholly across the enclosure, and has a central aperture covered with a dielectric sheet. A waveguide may be employed to couple the energy into the region 14, and the dielectric portion of the partition can, in the absence of fumes from the heated material, be dispensed with.
