A latch is provided with a snib bolt 21 operable against spring loading by a switch type finger lever or dolly 18 which imparts longitudinal displacement to the snib bolt 21 in either direction by co-operation with a notch or hollow 20 herein, the displacement, by reason of the spring loading and throwing action of the finger lever or dolly, having angular and sliding components and being in guides 22 in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of the latch bolt, the latch bolt lath 16 having notches or abutments 24, 25 with which the snib bolt 21 can be engaged according to whether the latch bolt is in the withdrawn position or the latching position. As shown, the snib bolt 21 is formed as a flat plate stamping of shallow U-shape to straddle the lath 16 and is loaded by a spring 23.
