Abstract
983,144. Welding by pressure. PYE Ltd. July 6, 1961 [July 15, 1960], No. 24729/60. Heading B3R. In cold welding two metal parts, one having a flange extending in a first plane and the other having a rib extending in a second plane substantially normal to the first plane, a part of the flange is distorted against one side of the rib to cold weld thereto and means are provided abutting the opposite side of the rib to back-up the rib during cold welding but to allow free flow of metal substantially in the second plane. A cylindrical welding tool 7, Fig. 1, is arranged about a thin metal cover 6 having a flange 5 to be welded to an annular rib 2 defined by annular grooves 3, 4 formed in a thick base 1 which may support a semi-conductor device and a cylindrical tool 8 is inserted in the groove 4. The plate 1 rests on a support 9 and to effect welding the tool 7 forces the flange 5 into the groove 3 and against the rib 2, free flow of metal taking place in the plane of the rib. In a modification the edge of the tool 7 adjacent the rib is chamfered. In another embodiment, the rib 22, Fig. 4, projects from the surface of the base and a further support rib 23 may be provided. The projecting rib may be an edge flange on the base.
