Abstract

A haemostatic dressing material which is absorbable by the body is made of oxidized regenerated cellulose filaments having a denier of 1 to 9, a degree of polymerization prior to oxidation of not more than about 400 glucose units and containing 12 to 25% COOH radical by weight. Chemically crimped carded viscose rayon fibres, which may be needled or knitted rayon fibres, are wrapped around a perforated core and oxidized in a reactor by a solution of dinitrogen tetroxide in trichlorotrifluoroethane for 15 1/2 hours at 24 DEG C. The oxidized regenerated cellulose is then washed three times in carbon tetrachloride or trichlorotrifluoroethane, to remove the dinitrogen tetroxide, followed by washing in 50% aqueous isopropyl alcohol and in 99% isopropyl alcohol, to remove the water. The material is then p dried at room temperature, packaged and sterilized by heat and formaldehyde vapour or other sterilizing process. The material may be used alone in thin layers or with a gauze pad or adhesive dressing or may be combined with cotton to form such a pad or adhesive dressing. The material may be used internally or externally and is gradually absorbed by the body.ALSO:Fibrous web material is made of oxidized regenerated cellulose filaments having a denier of 1 to 9, a degree of polymerization prior to oxidation of not more than about 400 glucose units and containing 12% to 25% COOH radical by weight.
