Abstract

Sintered strip or sheet of a platinum group metal or alloy is made by compacting, sintering and working flake powder of the platinum group metal. The flake powder may be compacted dry in a mould or it may be made into a paste with a liquid which will volatilize or decompose under heat, the paste is then applied to an inert support such as alumina, unglazed porcelain or zircon and sintered. The sintering temperature is over 800 DEG C. and generally 1000-1100 DEG C. for Pt and Pd. The liquid constituent of the paste may be water but preferably is a resin dissolved in an organic solvent such as a solution of alkaline condensed methanol methyl cyclohexanone polymer in 2-ethoxy ethanol, diacetone alcohol, 2-ethoxy acetate or similar solvent. The resin content is about 35% and the metal content 10-90%. The thermally decomposable liquids for forming the paste include metal bearing liquids containing Pt group metals, Au or Ag, i.e. liquid bright metals, e.g. gold tertiary dodecyl mercaptan in heptane containing 30% Au. For producing sintered alloys the metal components may be mixed together dry or the flake powder may be coated with, e.g., silver by mixing the flake with an organic silver solution and heating to reduce the silver compound. Alternatively the liquid bright metals may be used for the source of the alloying metal. Refractory oxides such as alumina and thoria may also be incorporated in the sintered alloy either as a dry powder or as a solution in an organic solvent, e.g. thorium nitrate in acetone. The sintered compact does not adhere to the inert support and is worked either hot or cold, e.g. rolling or forging to the required degree. Specification 575,998 is referred to.
