Abstract
980,717. Ripper machines. H. &. L. TOOTH CO. April 3, 1963, No. 13260/63. Heading E1G. Earth breaking equipment comprising a ripper, a breaker mounted for rocking movement in the ripper shank and retainer means resiliently and releasably located between the breaker and the shank so as to restrict frictionally rocking movement of the breaker. As shown a breaker W comprising a bearing portion 60 flanked by wing portions 65 is inserted endwise with the wings 65 vertical in an aperture 50 in the ripper shank A until the portion 60 is located in the aperture and then rotated to the working position in which the wings are substantially horizontal. The aperture 50 comprises a round bore 52 with upper and lower extensions 53 through which the wings pass during assembly, retaining pins R being inserted in the recesses 53 to prevent the wings being inadvertently withdrawn therethrough when the breaker rotates during use. Each pin R, Fig. 6, comprises a rubber section 77 between metal parts 75 and 76, shoulders 85 on the part 75 straddling the shank A and seating in counter-bores 56 and the part 76 having a curved surface 82 which mates with the surface of the bearing portion 60 and frictionally retains the breaker in working position. The breaker may be straight or, as shown, the wings 65 are swept back and may be upwardly or downwardly inclined. The leading edge 70 of the wings is bevelled and the circular section bearing portion 60 extends as a strengthening rib along each wedge. The shank A is of increased width in the area where the breaker is mounted. Alternatively the aperture 50 could be formed in a block welded to the rear edge of a conventional shank. Specification 791,022 is referred to.
