An apparatus for reducing the liquid content of a material, e.g. china clay slurry, containing both a liquid and solid matter includes a cylinder 27, an annular chamber 30, a porous sintered bronze sleeve 29, a pipe 48 connecting the chamber to a slurry of the material under pressure, so that liquid is forced through the sleeve by the pressure and out through a port 52 and outlet connection 56, an outlet valve 57 being held open by a spring 58, and a piston 24, movable within the chamber by the action of a hydraulic jack 13 for ejecting the material from the chamber through an opening therein which is opened and closed by a ring member 39 which moves relative to a valve sleeve 45 during part of the movement of the piston. As the end of the retraction stroke of the jack 13 is reached, a lever (not shown) is tripped to effect direction of cleansing water through an inlet connection 55 (causing the valve 57 to close the outlet connection 56), and, via an annular chamber 51, outwardly through the porous sleeve 29 which is positioned, at this stage, completely outside the cylinder 27. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the slurry is fed into the chamber 30 at a number of stations along the length thereof.
