In a press, a pressure member 4, joined by springs 14 to a second member 7, is reciprocated along guide columns 2 towards and away from press table 1 in a step-by-step manner. Each of the members 4 and 8 may be clamped in position on columns 2 by introducing fluid under pressure between outer rigid sleeves 10, carried by the members and inner deformable sleeves 9, of e.g. rubber, which surround the columns. In the preferred embodiment member 7 carries a piston and cylinder device 5, 6, 8 the piston-rod 5 of which is connected to member 4. In operation the upper member is clamped to the columns and the piston and cylinder mechanism is actuated to drive member 4 downwards until stop 11a carried by member 4, actuates a changeover switch 13 carried by member 7. This deactuates the piston and cylinder mechanism, releases member 7, and clamps member 4 thus causing the upper member 7 to move downward under the action of gravity and springs 14 until switch 13 abuts stop 11b. Switch 13 is thus re-actuated to release member 4, clamp member 7, and operate piston and cylinder 5, 6 8 once again thus moving pressure member 4 downwards by a further step to further compress the workpiece. In alternative embodiments the members may be clamped by means of brake-bands or by pins carried by the members which releasably engage holes in the guide columns. In a further embodiment the piston and cylinder mechanism may be replaced by an inflatable bladder interposed between the two members.
