980,362. Rolling; winding and reeling. DER VON MOOS SCHEN EISENWERKE A. G. Nov. 9, 1962 [Nov. 25, 1961], No. 42484/62. Headings B3E and B3M. A method of rolling out sections in a single pass is characterized in that the temperature of the stock is regulated in dependence of the filling of the pass groove. If the pass groove becomes underfilled, as measured by a radiation pyrometer 10, the temperature of the incoming stock is reduced, while for overfilling, the temperature is increased in dependence on the reduction in roll speed or overloading of the driving motors. The rolls of stands 2a and 2b are connected to the secondary winding of a transformer 6 so that the metal stock 4 acts as a conducting path. Movement of stand 2a by a handle 8a in a screw 8 varies the resistance of the current path and hence the heating of the stock. Before rolling, the stock passes a device 14 which straightens the stock and frees it from tension. The device is mounted on gently inclined rails 17 so that any tension in the stocks pulls the device 14 upwardly. This causes the drive from a motor 20 to the straightening rolls to be speeded up, thus cancelling the tension. This is effected by a roller which runs up an inclined fixed surface to rotate a lever arm and thus vary the effective diameter of an adjustable pulley which transmits the drive from the motor. Instead of the coilers of Fig. 1, a store 40, Fig. 5, and a stacking site 55 may be provided, and the store 40 may be replaced, if desired, by an electric, gas or oil-fired continuous furnace 40a for preheating the stock. Shifters, Fig. 6, are used in conjunction with the stacking site, each shifter having pivoted levers 52 and 54 which move the stock from the rolling line down an inclined surface 53 to the site 55. Where the rolled stock is not of flat form the conventional coiler may be replaced by one having a drum 31, Fig. 3, consisting of a cylindrical portion 31a and a conical portion 31b, the drum being driven around a fixed shaft 32 by an internally meshing pinion 34. A disc 38, having extending fingers 38a, is freely mounted on the shaft 32 at an angle to its axis, and is carried round by the drum so that the fingers oscillate in slots 31c to continually push stock towards the portion 31b of the drum.
