Abstract

The invention comprises substituted iminodibenzyls of the general formula <FORM:0980231/C2/1> wherein A represents an alkylene radical containing 2 to 5 carbon atoms with at least 2 carbon atoms between the connecting nitrogen atoms, and R represents hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms when R1 represents hydrogen, and R represents a benzyl radical or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms when R1 represents a benzyl radical, and non-toxic acid addition salts thereof, and the preparation thereof by reacting an alkali metal salt of iminodibenzyl with a reactive N - benzyl - N - alkylaminoalkyl halide or N,N-dibenzylaminoalkyl halide to form an N - (N - benzyl - N - alkylaminoalkyl) - iminodibenzyl or an N-(N,N-dibenzylaminoalkyl)-iminodibenzyl and subjecting the product to catalytic hydrogenation to cleave the N-benzyl or N,N-dibenzyl group. Therapeutic compositions which may be in the form of liquids, powders or tablets contain as the active ingredient iminodibenzyls of the above general formula or non-toxic acid addition salts thereof. The iminodibenzyls are potent analgetics and hypothermic agents. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 907,785 and 908,788.
