Abstract

980,136. Corrugated packing cases; box pallets. MARTIN FERREY Ltd., M. FERREY, and B. S. BRENNER. July 1, 1963 [June 29, 1962], No. 25016/62. Headings B8H and B8P. A tubular packing case 1 (Fig. 1) of corrugated paper has endpieces 4, also of corrugated paper, either shaped to form a plug 5 or to make a dovetail joint with the body wall. The layers of corrugated paper are joined by adhesive applied to the corrugations of a first sheet and secured to the smooth surface of a second sheet or to the corrugations thereof to provide a smooth surface on both sides. The corrugations may extend longitudinally or transversely of the tube and intermediate layers may be transverse to other layers. The corrugated paper may be laminated with fancy paper, metal foil, plastics, hessian, wire or canvas. Alternatively, the case may be formed from at least two layers of corrugated paper between which is inserted a pad of strips of corrugated paper secured by adhesive and with surfaces perpendicular to the first layers. The blank for the tube may be provided with wooden bars 8 (Fig. 3) between inner panels 7 to provide corner strengthening pieces, and this case may be encircled by wire or metal bands. The end pieces may be constructed with external strips of wood or metal over which wires or bands may be stretched for securing the ends. Further, the end plug may be provided with circumferential strips of wood or metal which rest on the edge of the tubular body. The lower end piece may be provided internally with a glued roll of corrugated paper to take the weight of the article and externally with glued rolls fitted in holes in the plate 4 (Fig. 1) and abutting against the plug 5, to provide a stillage for a fork-lift truck. Projecting flaps on the end piece may be folded over and adhered by contact or heat-seal adhesive to the tubular body. An end plug 18 (Fig. 7) may be formed by cutting a piece halfway through parallel to each edge, cutting off the corners and folding the marginal pieces 19 at right-angles to form a plug which is stitched to the tubular body 20. The case may be strutted internally or externally with corrugated paper members and may be fitted with internal members to form a hollow jacket of any shape. The tubular body may be formed from a blank with opposite edges 2 (Fig. 1) joined by a strip of adhesive paper 3, or by winding a number of layers on a former, and may incorporate a canvas handle or sling.
