Abstract

TiCl4 is reduced (in the presence of red #c,g TiCl3 and in an inert solvent) at a temperature of from -20 DEG C. to +20 DEG C. by an organo metallic reducing reagent which if used to reduce TiCl4 in the absence of red #c,g TiCl3 would give rise to TiCl3 wholly or partly in the b form. The red TiCl3 may be prepared by reduction of TiCl4 with C2H5AlCl2 at 0 DEG C., and is preferably used in an amount less than 10% molar of the TiCl4 to be reduced. The organo-metallic reducing reagent may be an aluminium trialkyl in which each alkyl contains less than 5 carbon atoms, or an aluminium dialkyl halide such as aluminium diethyl chloride. In the example, TiCl4 is added to a stirred petrol solution of C2H5AlCl2 at 0 DEG C. (C2H5)2AlCl and more TiCl4 are added to the solution. The product is filtered off, washed with petrol at 0 DEG C. and subjected to heat treatment at 85% in a stirred 0.3 m. petrol slurry.ALSO:a -olefines are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst which is the product of the reduction of TiCl4 in an inert solvent at - 20 DEG to +20 DEG in the presence of red a ,g TiCl3 by an organometallic reducing agent which if used to reduce TiCl4 in the absence of red a ,g TiCl3 would give rise to TiCl3 in the b -form. The organometallic reducing reagents may be an aluminium trialkyl in which each alkyl contains less than 5 carbon atoms or an aluminium dialkyl halide. In an example propylene is polymerized at 50 DEG C. in a high-boiling petrol containing 10 millimetres/litre Ti activated by (C2H5)2AlCl The resulting polymer has lower per cent soluble in heptane than polymer prepared using prior art catalyst of this type.ALSO:A component of a catalyst for polymerizing a -olefines is produced by reducing TiCl4 in an inert solvent in the presence of red a ,g TiCl3 at a temperature of from -20 DEG C. to +20 DEG C. with an organo-metallic reducing agent which if used to reduce TiCl4 in the absence of red a ,g TiCl3 would give rise to TiCl3 wholly or partly in the b -form. The red TiCl3 may be prepared by reduction of TiCl4 with C2W5AlCl2 at 0 DEG C., and is preferably used in an amount less than 10% molar of the TiCl4 to be reduced. The organo-metallic reducing agent may be an aluminium trialkyl in which each alkyl contains less than 5 carbon atoms, or an aluminium dialkyl halide such as aluminium diethyl chloride.
