979,972. Harvesting root-crops. ROBERT H. CRAWFORD & SON Ltd. May 5, 1961 [May 6, 1960], No. 16203/60. Heading A1F. A potato-picking machine which is towed by a tractor and which has a transverse tray into which the roots are thrown by operators following the machine comprises a wheeled frame 1 mounted on groundwheels 8 and attached to tractor hitchlinks, the tray having a conveyer 20 extending along it, the conveyer being provided with partitions 22 which divide it into a series of continuously-moving pockets, and is provided with a rear wall 17 and a higher front wall 18 and also has an inclined run 10 extending upwardly to a discharge shoot 40 for delivery to a vehicle W alongside. In a modification (Fig. 4) the discharge shoot 63 feeds the crop on to a shaking grid 64 and from thence on to a bagging tray 65 suspended by chains from a cross-beam 67 on the tractor. The main frame 1 includes a rectangular frame 11 carrying pins 13, 13<SP>1</SP> for the hitch-links. The belt 20 is driven from the power takeoff 27 through gearing 27, 28, 29 and a beltdrive 31 to the upermost pulley 32. The operators may walk behind or lie on a carriage towed behind the machine.
