979,812. Navigational instruments. D.H.T. MACMILLAN. May 21, 1962 [May 25, 1961], No. 18979/61. Heading G1X. The compass bearings of three fixed points A, B, C, are taken from a vessel and the arms 5, 6, 7 of a plotting instrument correspondingly adjusted relative to a 360 degrees protractor 1. By aligning the bevelled edges of arms 5, 6, 7, with the points A, B, C, on a chart, the vessel's position may be marked with a pencil through a central aperture in the instrument. By marking through an aperture 19 at the zero graduation 2 of the scale and drawing line ZZ the zero position i.e. true or magnetic north as given by the gyro or magnetic compass is determined. If a line NN is transferred from the compass rose on the map any error in the compass is determined by angle a . Each arm 5, 6, 7, is attached by screws 10 to a disc 8, adjacent discs being separated by washers 12 and locked in position, when adjusted, by nut 14. Arm 6 may be independently locked in alignment with the zero graduation 2, by screw 18 engaging an L-shaped bar 16 and protractor 1 has a second set of graduations (not shown) extending from 0 to 180 degrees each side of the zero mark 2 to facilitate the use of the instrument as a station pointer.
