Abstract

Copolymers of propylene diethers of formula <FORM:0979655/C3/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen or aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radicals, R4 is an n-valent aromatic radical and n is a positive integer, may be prepared by copolymerizing such compounds with ethylenically unsaturated compounds. Polymerization may be effected in bulk, solution, dispersion or emulsion, optionally in the presence of reinforcing agents, fillers, pigments, dyestuffs and plasticizers, and may be initiated by heat, irradiation or radical-forming catalysts. Specified comonomers are styrene, a -methylstyrene, chlorostyrenes, acrylic and methacrylic esters, amides and nitriles, vinyl acetate, methyl vinyl ketone, methyl vinyl ether, maleic and fumaric esters, maleic anhydride and unsaturated polyesters of maleic and fumaric acids. Specified reinforcing agents and fillers are quartz powder, glass fibres, glass woven fabrics, wool, asbestos and metal powder. Specified catalysts are diacetyl, dibenzoyl, lauroyl and t.-butyl peroxides; methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone, cumyl and t.-butyl hydroperoxides; t.-butyl peracetate; t.-butyl perbenzoate; di-t.-butyl diperphthalate; peracetic acid; hydrogen peroxide; potassium and ammonium persulphates and azodiisobutyronitrile. Other catalysts are mixtures of cobalt salts and hydroperoxide, mixtures of tertiary amines and diacyl peroxides, and catalysts for anionic and cationic polymerization. Examples describe the copolymerization of styrene with the reaction product of (1 and 2) p-isopropenylphenyl glycidyl ether and 2,2-di(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane; (3) p-isopropenylphenylglycidyl ether and a , a 1-di (4-hydroxyphenyl)-a , a -, a 1, a 1-tetramethyl-p-xylene; (4) p-isopropenylphenylglycidyl ether and a copolymer of styrene and p-isopropenyl phenol; and (5) p-isopropenylglycidyl ether and phenol; and the copolymerization of (6) acrylonitrile with the reaction product of p-(1-phenyl vinyl)-phenylglycidyl ether and 4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl sulphide; (7) methyl methacrylate with the reaction product of p-(1-ethylvinyl)phenyl glycidyl ether and 1,1-di (4-hydroxyphenyl) cyclohexane; (8) styrene, unsaturated polyesters based on maleic and fumaric acids and the reaction product of p-isopropenylphenyl glycidyl ether and 2,2-di(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane; and (9) styrene with the reaction product of p-isopropenylphenyl glycidyl ether and the reaction product of bis-phenol A and 2,21-dichlorodiethyl ether.
