[Also in Division H4] A railway traffic monitoring or control arrangement comprises a Doppler radar with its beam extending along the track and means for counting the cycles of the Doppler frequency signal produced by a vehicle moving along the track to give a signal proportional to distance travelled by the vehicle. The invention is described as applied to a railway shunting yard but it is also applicable to traffic control at railway level crossings and to safeguarding railway repair gangs by automatically operating a warning or a braking device when a vehicle exceeds a predetermined minimum distance dependent on the speed of the vehicle. As shown, the aerial of the radar 4 is located between the rails and slightly above the sleepers with its beam 3 directed to the right along the track and when a shunted wagon enters the beam 3 from the left the counter 6 is initiated by a rail contact 5 or by a relay which operates when the amplitude of the reflected radar signal exceeds a predetermined threshold value, the counter being restarted when another wagon enters the beam. In order to prevent a false distance indication due to a moving wagon rebounding from a stationary wagon, the radar provides two separate Doppler frequency outputs corresponding to forward and backward movement of the wagon, the counter 6 being arranged to count forwards or backwards according to which output it receives. The radar may also measure the speed of the wagon and control a brake 7 to slow the wagon to a permissable speed before it strikes the wagon in front of it.
