979,395. Shock-absorbers. W. K. WASDELL. Oct. 10, 1963 [Oct. 13, 1962], No. 38839/62. Heading F2S. A shock - absorber comprises a fluid-filled working cylinder 1 for a valved piston having a rod 3 which extends through a seal at one end of the cylinder 1 and the other end of which is closed by a foot valve 14 for controlling flow of fluid from the cylinder 1 into a recuperation chamber C defined within an extension tube 4 secured, at its upper end, to the lower portion of the cylinder 1 to provide an annular gap B for the reception of the skirt 9 of an elastic and flexible sack 8. The latter separates the foot valve 14 from the atmosphere which is admitted to the recuperation chamber C e.g. through an opening 16 in an end closure cap 6 for the extension tube 4. The sack 8 has a beaded upper end 10 which is clamped in the closed upper end of the annular space B by the radiused end 12 of a sleeve 11 disposed within the tube 4 with its lower end in abutment with the cap 6. Instead of drilling the hole 16, small air holes may be provided in the joint between the cap 6 and the extension tube 4.
