A wheel stop for rail vehicles, comprises two parts 10, 11, each having a jaw 15 with a chamfered surface 16 to engage a rail head 13; a stem 18 on part 10 projects with clearance through an opening 19 in part 11 and the two parts are forced into clamping engagement by inserting a wedge 21 into an opening 20 in stem 18, the wedge being attached by a chain 24 to stem 18. Part 11 has inclined surfaces 26 to engage with a wheel of an advancing truck which will be derailed by the stop unless moving slowly.
