978,773. Rolling. VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE A.G. Feb. 19, 1962 [Feb. 22, 1961], No. 6364/62. Heading B3M. A device for guiding the sides of a metal strip to a rolling or like mill comprises opposed guide bars movable transversely of the strip and carrying rollers, and is characterized in that a drive means for one of the bars includes a spring of variable initial stress which, when overcome by the compression force of the guides on the strip, causes the said driving means to be stopped. The two guide bars 2, 3 carry rollers 4 and are provided with transverse slideways on a table 1 which can be raised and lowered. A lug 7 is mounted on a fixed frame member 8 and carries an hydraulic cylinder 6a; the piston rod of this hydraulic unit is coupled to the slide 3. A second hydraulic cylinder 5a mounted on a member 11 is carried on a hollow screw-threaded shaft 12 having an internal abutment for a spring 9 housed in a bore in the fixed member 8. The required chip compression is set by prestressing spring 9 with screw 12. In operation, hydraulic pressure is supplied to the cylinders whose pistons pull the guide on the opposite side of the machine towards them until they have both contacted the sides of the strip to be guided. When the compression of the strip thus induced exceeds to pre-set compression in the spring 9, the cylinder 5a will move to the right. This movement actuates a limit switch, not shown, which cuts off the hydraulic supply to the two cylinders. The guide traversing may alternatively be derived from electric motor-driven screw spindles or other mechanical means.
