Abstract
978,570. Hypodermic syringes. S. MYERSON, and R. L. MYERSON. May 10, 1961, No. 17009/61. Heading A5R. A sterile packaged hypodermic needle for insertion into a needle-receiving passage in a syringe has a sterile sleeve mounted to enclose the syringe entrant end of the needle, both the needle and the sleeve being insertable in the passage. A double-pointed needle 2 has a resilient sleeve 32 tightly slidable on one end. The needle is packaged in a container 24 having a cap. For use, the cap is removed and the container held so that the end of the needle carrying the sleeve is exposed. The exposed end of the needle is then inserted in the forward end of a syringe 4 having gripping jaws 14 and containing a medicament cartridge 20 closed by a pierceable cap 21. The needle is passed through a passage 15 between the jaws and a wider passage 19 until the needle point penetrates a cartridge cap, the sleeve, which may have an end wall over the needle point, being retained between the jaws by projections 43 as the needle is moved towards the cartridge. When the needle has penetrated the cartridge cap, the jaws are tightened against the sleeve and the needle by a threaded cap 12. The jaws may have protuberances (not shown) extending into the passage 15 which, when the jaws are tightened, deform the sleeve and needle slightly. Instead of the projections on the jaws, the sleeve may have a flared portion 34 which engages an enlarged mouth 14a between the jaws to retain the sleeve between the jaws as the needle approaches the cartridge. Alternatively, a cylindrical sleeve (not shown) is moved with the needle as far as the cartridge cap, the outer face of which arrests movement of the sleeve as the needle pierces the cap. The needle-receiving jaws may be omitted and a hub may be secured centrally about the needle for securing the needle to the syringe. In a modification, the syringe has an initially empty cartridge 20 (Fig. 12) and a cylindrical rubber sleeve 98 is mounted on one end of the needle which has a threaded hub 90 for securing to the syringe. The sleeve 98 provides a closure for the cartridge when the needle is applied to the syringe. The sleeve may have a flared flange 210 (Fig. 17) which spaces it and the needle point from the passage 218 into which the needle is inserted.
